I am incredibly excited to be at Greenspire for the 2019-2020 school year, which will be my first year here. I am originally from Chicago, and over the last few years worked at one of the most diverse high schools in the city, in the North Park neighborhood. Having double-majored in math and philosophy, I taught courses in both the English and Math departments – including Creative Writing, Social Justice, and Algebra.
As a math instructor, I am constantly looking for ways to make the curriculum more relevant and applicable to students’ lives, so that the question “When will I ever need to know this?” doesn’t naturally arise. Greenspire’s project based approach drew my interest in the school, as it has been proven to be an extraordinarily effective and beneficial way to learn, and I am eager to become more skilled in applying a project based framework.
We tell stories qualitatively, with words, and quantitatively, with numbers, statistics, and data. An understanding of math opens doors, not only to high-demand fields like computer science and engineering, but also in smaller ways – it gives one the confidence needed to pick the right savings account at the bank, or do-it-one’s-self with carpentry repairs rather than call a handyperson, or (in my case) take up scuba diving, knowing one can correctly estimate the time one has left underwater! I hope to foster understanding and confidence in students’ problem solving abilities, and ultimately encourage a sense of wonder at the power of mathematical concepts.
I enjoy traveling (having lived in Australia, India, England, and France for times ranging from a few months to a few years) and immersing myself in other cultures. I first visited Traverse City about eight years ago, through a friend who I met on my travels. I was stunned by its natural beauty and continued to be on subsequent visits. For years I have had the desire to live in a more mindful way and closer to nature, so I am very happy to have made the move to Northern Michigan and to have a chance to explore all that it has to offer.
