Hello Middle School Community –
Project Kick Off Monday and Tuesday!
Students will be participating in Ability Awareness simulations in several classes for the Quarter 2 Project Kick Off this week. The purpose of these activities is to build awareness and empathy for individuals with a wide variety of physical disabilities and cognitive impairments. This is only the beginning of a quarter-long study intended to move students through the understanding and advocacy of individuals with disabilities as well as a study of ASD, ADD, and ADHD. This is a repeat project that we have done for years and it includes visits from several community guests. This project has proven to enrich student learning while building a stronger school community. Even our annual Season of Giving event will be integrated into this project – more details about that coming soon!

Grand Traverse Commons Natural Area Project
A new design plan for the Grand Traverse Commons Natural Area has been unveiled, showing a proposed 9.65-mile trail system for the park – including mountain biking, hiking, and other new trails – as well as new park trailheads, amenities, and safety and environmental upgrades. Several million dollars’ worth of improvements are recommended at the Commons Natural Area as part of Garfield Township’s first formal plan for the property. The township is accepting public comment until November 20, 2022. On January 10, 2023, the township plans to hold their last public hearing on the draft, with fundraising beginning in 2023. If you, alumni you know, or any other family members would like to write to the township with your thoughts, please do so by Sunday, November 20, 2022 via email at parks@garfield-twp.com.
