Last Friday, our 8th graders had a fantastic experience touring two amazing local businesses right here in Traverse City—Cone Drive and Cultured Kombucha! Both companies opened their doors to give students a behind-the-scenes look at the world of manufacturing. We extend a huge thank you to Cone Drive and Cultured Kombucha for their hospitality and for providing such an engaging learning opportunity.
In other news, a handful of returning students kicked off “The Haunted Forest” on Friday, marking the beginning of our most anticipated event of the year! All students had the chance to sign up for various roles, and they’ll be meeting in committees during brain break and lunch over the next few weeks to prepare for the big night on October 25th.
Please ask your student which committee they joined or if they need to bring anything to help with preparations. While participation is optional, “The Haunted Forest” is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we’d love for everyone to be involved—whether as a planner, participant, or simply by attending with friends and family. Let’s make this event a success and create lasting memories!

English: English in the coming weeks will be reading heavy, including the fictional stories that students will be reading in, but mostly outside of class. Please reference the email from Claire sent 10/3. We will spend time reading nonfiction texts in class. The goal is for students to become informed on the facts about immigration in the US so they can take a stance on it for our final product: the set-up of a debate.
Especially with the fiction books they are reading, please try to allow for time daily to read outside of school!
Science: Students should have chosen a Wicked Problem for their Epic Menu meal plan by now. They should also have the Wicked Problem Research completed by Monday. This is weekend homework if not yet complete. Next week we will turn our attention to human nutrient needs and the limitations due to their Wicked Problem. Experiments will be used to further our understanding of digestion and getting energy from our caloric intake. Students will begin to consider what types of foods would best disrupt their Wicked Problems.

Art and PE: This week, our class took on an exciting project: redesigning our school’s currency, the “Sturgeon Buck”! The students put their creativity to work, developing unique designs that reflect the spirit of our school community. Every student got the chance to create a design and next week we will vote on which design will be the new “Sturgeon Buck”!
Next week, we will kick off a special fundraiser for our art program through “Art to Remember.” This initiative allows families to purchase products featuring their students’ artwork, from mugs to t-shirts and more! It’s a wonderful way to celebrate your child’s creativity while supporting our art program. Stay tuned for more details!
This week in PE, we focused on teamwork and communication through a variety of fun and challenging activities. Students participated in games that required cooperation, problem-solving, and strategy. It was amazing to see how they worked together and supported one another!
Next week, we’re excited to kick off our sports unit! We’ll be introducing a variety of sports, giving students a chance to learn new skills, practice teamwork, and enjoy some healthy competition. Be ready to get active and try something new!
Outdoor Education: This week in OE we explored our sit spots for a second time and walked from a different direction so that we could get to know Baple Mountain a bit better. We saw many birds, squirrels, and various mammals who are slowly making their way back into the carbon chain. We tasted our first apples! The orchard is full of all sorts of interesting items, so we climbed trees and tasted some apples cared for only by Mother Nature; the only thing worse than biting into an apple with a worm, is finding half a worm! We will enjoy these apples in cider in the coming weeks, and look forward to our next fall harvest, staghorn sumac to prepare some za’atar!
