Kim DeCew

Special Education Teacher

I’ve always been a life-long learner. That doesn’t mean I’ve always been the best student. I struggled. I couldn’t see the practical “me in the world” application, I just didn’t get it. I struggled. I continued to struggle through high school, until finally I found myself and how/where I belong in education; ironically, (or not ironically?) when I decided to become a teacher. I decided that I wanted to be that teacher that I always needed. I was lucky. My teaching mentor said to me, “I believe that everyone is a life-long learner. so long as they are a part of the process.” This simple statement opened my world of teaching AND learning that continues today. I began college with a whole new vibe.

I graduated from Southern Illinois University with a degree in Communication and a focus on teaching and then began teaching “for real” as a graduate assistant at Illinois State University. That kicked off a 20+ year career in higher education. I’ve had the privilege of teaching and learning in a culture of growth through student-centered education as a college professor, a continuing education program coordinator, and an academic advisor.

I joined The Greenspire High School team in March of 2024 as an Inclusive Education Teacher. It was not easy to leave my family and pursue a fulfilling career in Illinois, but this move is an “intentional homecoming” – back to Michigan, where I was born, back to family, and back to the heart of whole-child, student-centered learning. I picked a spot in Grand Traverse County close to family, out in the country but close to the energy of TC. So, you could say I have the best of both worlds! I began substitute teaching in January 2023 and am thrilled to find a home at The Greenspire School.

When I am not at school, you can find me rockhounding, exploring local markets, and relaxing (usually eating) with family and friends. I have 2 grown children – one studying to become a teacher herself and my oldest is living and working his best life, and getting married in 2025. I love traveling back to the Chicago area to visit, exploring every Michigan beach I can, and I have several cats and dogs that also keep me pretty busy.
