Brittany Roeper

Language Arts Teacher

I am a new Michigander by way of Houston, Texas, where I was born and raised. As a kid, I read every book I could get my hands on. I was an avid writer, typing up stories on my grandmother’s Acer ‘95 computer. In high school, fell in love with poetry. It eventually led me across the country to Oregon, where I got a degree in creative writing.

I taught my first class at the University of Oregon: Introduction to Poetry. That experience sparked my passion for teaching. Now, I get to lead students in their discovery of language. I introduce them to new written worlds, to people like and unlike themselves. I encourage them to find their own voices.

Most of my non-teaching time is spent with my husband, Chris, and our dog-baby, Ender. We traded Houston’s sweltering hustle for the calm of Traverse City, supported by our amazing extended family. I love the natural beauty of this place and the vibrance of our creative community. I am so glad to be here – in Northern Michigan and at Greenspire.
